Pertanyaan Menuju Beasiswa Luar Negeri Ala Budi Waluyo

            Saya banyak menimba ilmu pengetahuan yang berguna dan inspiratif dari ebook  Kanda Budi Waluyo. Dalam buku tersebut dijelaskan mengenai kiat-kiat dalam menembus beasiswa luar negeri. Yang paling saya sukai adalah bagian pertanyaan yang harus diisi dan dijawab saat sesi pengisian aplikasi dan wawancara. Berikut hasil ringkasannnya.


A.PERTANYAAN DI LEMBARAN BEASISWA

Pertanyaan Mengapa Belajar di Australia
Why do you want to study in Australia?
 Studying in Australia is a way to realize my future goals and link between my background study and future goals. This country has definitely occupied an absolute world leading position in educational fields, not to mention in Language Teaching and Educational Technology. In relation to my research topic, Australia has applied distance education for school-aged children in the remote areas. The distance education system blends Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in the implementation. This will enable me gain advanced theories, technologies, and information that will facilitate me immensely to become an accomplished professional in the field of education.

Pertanyaan Skill dan kemampuan yang ingin diraih
What skills and knowledge do you hope to gain and how do you propose to use them?
I hope to gain skills and knowledge about how to create and implement a distance learning system combined with ICT (Information and Communications Technology ) for rural education. I will use these skills and knowledge to create a distance learning system and implement it for school-aged children in remote areas in Indonesia. The distance learning system will be an alternative solution for the unequal distribution in quality of education between remote areas and cities in Indonesia.

Permasalahan atau tantangan yang pernah dihadapi
How have you contributed to solving a challenge and to implementing a change or reform? (be specific and include: what aspects of your leadership knowledge, skills and practice you consider to be well established and effective; which people or organization you work with to solve the problem, and what creative methods were used?)
I was once sent by my university in a group to an isolated village in Bengkulu province. I was the leader of the group. The children in the village had little access to education. There were limited school buildings, limited qualified teachers, poor learning facilities and low learning achievements. Together with my friends, I created daily study groups after school for the children and gave workshops and trainings for the villagers. This resulted some good changes in the village. The children’s interest in learning increased and the villagers learned new knowledge and skills for their living.


Kontribusi yang akan diberikan selesai kuliah
What specific priority will you contribute to on your return home and how do you intend to do so?
I will focus my contribution on the issues of school-aged children’s education in remote areas in Indonesia. I intend to create a distance education system and implement it for school-aged children in remote areas in Indonesia to solve the unequal distribution in quality of education between remote areas and cities. I have a strong commitment to develop the Community Learning Center that my friends and I established five years ago. This Community Learning Center will facilitate “distance learning” for Elementary, Junior, and Senior High School students in remote areas in Indonesia, especially in my province; Bengkulu.

Paragraf pertama didalam study objective berisi tentang program apa yang dilamar, misalnya Master’s degree. Kemudian, jurusan apa yang dituju. Berikan alasan kenapa tertarik dengan jurusan tersebut. Apa yang bisa dikerjakan atau dipelajari di jurusan itu? Keuntungan atau pengetahuan seperti apa yang bisa diberikan oleh jurusan itu.
Contoh:
I am applying for a master’s program in English teaching either in TESOL or in TEFL/TESL. I have a high interest in learning the theory and gaining practical experiences of teaching English, i.e. the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) using integrated approaches, methods, and techniques for an effective teaching and learning process. Besides, I am further aware of the technology development in education, such as the use of audio-video, and computer software and animation, in order to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of classroom interaction. I believe that this master’s program can prepare me to assume a specialty in the field of English teaching approaches, methods, and techniques supported by the use of multimedia and educational technology focusing not only to classroom practice but also to self-access study.
Rencana penelitian
Paragraf selanjutnya berisi tentang rencana penelitian yang akan dilakukan ketika studi nanti. Apa topik penelitian yang akan dikerjakan? Apa latar belakang dan manfaat dari penelitian itu? Kita Contoh:
In the master’s program, I plan to conduct a research on integrated and practical English teaching methods taking into account various life contexts of the learners. I believe the methods implemented in one context should be different from those in another context. Because there are many factors influencing the success of learning, such as, culture, experience in learning a new language, knowledge, family background, and future goal, the teaching methods used in the classroom must be different for different learners. Briefly, this research will raise issues of the learners’ differences in English teaching, then explore and integrate the diversity to develop the most suitable pedagogical methods and syllabus.

Skill dan pengetahuan yang dapat menunjang studi
Didalam study objective, perlu dijelaskan apa saja skill dan pengetahun yang telah kita miliki agar dapat menunjang studi kita nanti. Bagaimana pendidikan kita sebelumnya berkaitan dengan studi yang akan diambil ini? Apa saja publikasi-publikasi yang telah kita lakukan? Contoh:
My bachelor study on English Teacher Training and Education has prepared me with a strong ground in English and theoretical aspects of teaching which can contribute to personal and professional development and taking a master’s program. I have learned about the theory of studying and learning, the professions of education, teaching English as a foreign language, curriculum and material development, and teaching in practice in my bachelor study, with flying colors. I have also written scientific papers and articles on education since I was an undergraduate student. One of the papers was awarded as a runner up in “Sayembara Ide (Idea Competition)”at provincial level. My articles have also been published in a bilingual newspaper. At the end of my undergraduate study, I received a full mark for my undergraduate thesis on English education. Such experiences are certainly interconnected, and from which I have learnt that English teaching should be dominated by advanced concepts and assisted by effective teaching strategies. For this reason, my background indicates that I have prepared myself to perform well in my future study

Rencana Masa Depan
My future goal is to be a specialist in the field of English teaching as I have strong a commitment to develop the community learning centre that my friends and I established three years ago. This community learning centre will facilitate “distance learning” for elementary, junior, and senior high school students in remote areas of Bengkulu Province, such as in Kaur Regency, Seluma Regency, and North Bengkulu Regency. As a graduate from the Faculty of English Teacher Training and Education, I have the responsibility to run a good English teaching practice in the community learning centre. However, the most challenging part in the project is the fact that the students come from different cultures, family backgrounds, educations, mother tongues, or even views of life that will absolutely influence the success of the children in reaching the language learning goal. Therefore, my future study in this master’s program will be very beneficial for me in enriching my knowledge of integrating learners’ differences into the most appropriate English teaching methods to be implemented in the community learning centre. Besides, my experience in doing this research will apparently create systematic concepts in my mind about formulating practical English teaching methods based on the diversity of the learners. As a result, in the future I will be able to design the most appropriate



Riwayat pendidikan, publikasi dan prestasi

I accomplished my study on English Teacher Training and Education for three years and eight months, and gained a bachelor degree in April 2009 from Bengkulu University. Since I was a student, I have been a teaching practitioner. I have put the theories I learnt at college into practice at different levels of educational institutions (e.g., elementary, junior, and senior high schools) and English courses. Out of my teaching career, I have developed a heartfelt love to this profession. I have received some awards that endow me with a strong sense of pride and achievement. Those include obtaining at runner up winner in “Sayembara Ide (idea competition)” at provincial level, having my articles published in a bilingual newspaper, and being a participant in JICA Japan seminar in Bengkulu province. Besides, I have also developed leadership skills by joining organizations such as English Department Student Association, Kesatuan Aksi Mahasiswa Muslim Indonesia (a unity of indonesian muslim student action), Pengembangan, Penelitian, dan Penalaran Mahasiswa (students development, research, and analysis), in which I have frequently played educational roles.

Pengalaman Kerja atau Magang

Since I graduated from university, I have been working as an English lecturer in Bengkulu University. In this University, I teach English in some departments, such as Dept. Law, Dept. Match, Dept. Accounting, Dept. Chemistry, Dept. Biology, Dept. Machine Engineering, and Dept. Economics. In addition, I teach English in  Nursing and Midwife Academic. In my teaching practice, I always move from the conventional English teaching strategies to creative teaching by using, for instance, visual media, mini plays, role plays, drama, classroom debates, and out-bond. I unify among the learners needs, materials, and facilities in choosing the appropriate teaching strategies. Consequently, I have gained experience of how to devise a lesson, select teaching materials, facilitate active classroom activities, and choose the most effective teaching strategies. These have then enabled me to see how my ideas and innovations have led me to desired results and made me suitably qualified to apply this master’s program.

The issues of school-aged children’s education in remote areas in Indonesia have interested me since I was doing my bachelor degree. I involved myself into some organizations that concerned on this issue, such as …. Besides, I also once worked with …. to assist government programs on school-aged children’s education in remote areas in Indonesia. Indonesian government plans to solve the issues and close the gaps between cities and remotes in terms of the quality of education. I expect to take part in this program. I have read some literature on this topic and I found that most of the researchers are from institutions in the US. In addition, I have also read that some institutions in the US have successfully implemented some programs to solve such issues. Therefore, I believe that with all that quality I can gain more valuable insights in my research.
